Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the way we learn, teach and make sense of the world around us. Within education, the integration of AI has rapidly become a critical policy priority across European Union countries. This has been propelled both by technological acceleration and by the imperative to equip citizens with the competencies to navigate and shape an increasingly digital future.
To address this growing need, the ‘FutureProof Education: Supporting schools in the AI evolution’ project brings together a cohort of six European education systems. The aim is to form a community of practice to advance strategies and tools for the ethical, meaningful, and safe use of AI in schools.
In collaboration with the Flemish Department of Education and Training (Belgium), the Ministry of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (Belgium), the Ministry of School and Education of North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany), the Department of Education and Youth (Ireland), the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth (Luxembourg), and the Swedish National Agency for Education (Sweden), the project creates a unique platform for collective problem-solving and cross-country innovation, while providing tailored support to each context.
Launched in September 2025, this project aims to:
- Adopt or update strategies and school-level guidance on the ethical, meaningful and safe implementation of AI in school education.
- Develop practical toolkits and professional development resources to assist schools, teachers, school leaders and relevant authorities to manage the integration of AI into school education.
- In Belgium and Luxembourg, conceptualize a mechanism for education stakeholders to validate the use of AI systems in education and explore ways AI can be integrated in learning resource platforms.
